UBCAni’s 2021 in-person events COVID protocol

UBCAni will firmly require the BC Vaccine Card of full, double-dose vaccination (i.e. the green QR code) for all events starting October 24th.

We understand that members from outside of the province may be experiencing delays, but per BC’s provincial health regulations, we will be forced to only accept the QR code vaccine passport and deny entry to those without it, even if you have other proof of vaccination. For those from outside of BC (including international students), you will need to register to get vaccinated here with your Personal Health Number. If you don’t have a PHN, you will need to call +1-833-838-2323. If you got vaccinated outside of BC, please apply online for your immunization record here. Lastly, if your out-of-BC records are in a language other than English or French, please refer to this for translating it.

Thank you for respecting our Covid-19 protocols!

Thank you all for attending the icebreaker!

A big, big thank you to the literally astonishing, record-setting scores of people who attended our icebreaker event this past Friday. We hope you had a good time! A few housekeeping things:

First of all, for everyone who purchased a membership but was not given the 2021-2022 membership card and given a card from previous years as an IOU, we apologize for the inconvenience and are waiting to receive another batch of cards to give out to you as soon as possible! We will notify everyone of when we receive the new batch of cards and then you will be free to attend any of our future events, including weekly activites, to exchange your IOU for this year’s valid membership card that you can provide to sponsors. You are also free to contact an exec (directly on Discord or message our Facebook page) to arrange a different meeting time at our clubroom in the Nest at room 3206C.

Second of all, our abomination of an Icebreaker video is now freely available to the public to microdose themselves with radioactive bursts of cringe- uh, I mean, to watch! See below:

Finally, we know it was an incredibly hectic start and we apologize for that. This was genuinely a record-breaking event for our club, and we hope to be much better prepared for events in the future. That said, we would always appreciate member feedback on whether you enjoyed the event, our video, and the games we came up with! We will be grateful for any feedback we receive and will use it to improve the club’s future events. Fill out the feedback form here

Clubs Days and other announcements

Regarding the COVID Vaccine Passport

As you may now be aware, our activities and events at UBC Anime Club will be returning to being in person starting this week. Per AMS’s regulations for all club events and meetups as well as British Columbia’s provincial health policies, we will be requiring all attendees to present proof of their vaccination against COVID, ideally with the QR code vaccine passport and a copy of government-issued ID with a matching name. If you are unable to show proof of your vaccination or are not vaccinated, we reserve the right to deny you entry to our events.

Clubs Days: Memberships available for purchase!

When: 11AM to 3PM, next Tuesday and Wednesday, September 21 – 22
Where: AMS Nest/Main Mall. You can’t miss the 5 gazillion booths. We’ll be one of them!

We will be boothing in-person selling memberships and answering questions about the club! We accept payment by cash or debit/credit card in person. Look for the degeneracy and the guy in the maid outfit. We’re hard to miss. Now, technically, these dates aren’t set in stone, because Clubs Days formally takes place from September 21 to 24, and clubs are only given 2 days to booth in person while the other 2 are meant to be a virtual booth. So technically, this date could change next week. If it does, we’ll let you know in next week’s newsletter. Until then, though, we will use these dates.

Unavailable on either of those days? We will still be selling memberships in person on September 23 and 24, but these will (presumably) be from 11AM to 3PM at our clubroom in the Nest, room 3206c. You’re also free to buy memberships at our Icebreaker event on the 24th or at any other event throughout the year, including weeklies!

Membership Prices
$8 for Returning UBC Members
$10 for New UBC Members
$12 for Returning non-UBC Members
$15 for New non-UBC Members

You may be wondering- if I can attend UBCAni events regardless of whether I’m a member, why should I buy a membership? Well, benefits include member-exclusive discounts at our sponsors (local restaurants and anime stores in Vancouver) just by flashing your membership card, access to our library of weeb goods, discounts at UBCAni’s bigger paid events like our annual Cosplay Cafe, and more! Also, members get free pizza at some of our events, like our upcoming Icebreaker (see below for more information).

Welcome to UBC Anime Club! (Imagine Day 2021)

Thanks for coming to check us out on this year’s rather… different Imagine Day. Again. This page serves as a hub of relevant links for you to click through, as well as a general overview of who we are, what we do, and what we have planned for today.

Join our virtual booth via our Discord server at ubcani.com/discord

Until later this year when in-person restrictions are loosened, the vast majority of real time interaction, whether it’s chatting or running online versions of our weekly activities, will probably take place in our Discord. You can chat to us (the execs) in real time for whatever you need, as well as other members!

For Imagine Day, the schedule is as follows. These games will be hosted online via our Discord. Check the #imagine-day channel for live updates, more information, or to ask related questions!

Schedule:
3:30 – 4:30 PM: Weeb Jackbox (Quiplash)
4:30 – 5:30 PM: Weebs Against Humanity

Have more general questions about the club that aren’t answered here? We’ll also be hosting a UBCAni Q&A panel simultaneously (once again, in Discord). Stop by to say hi or ask whatever you like!

Join our mailing list for weekly newsletter updates on what we’re planning each week as well as events, both hosted by us and relevant ones from partners, and featured artwork from our own members. Normal daily online discussion will take place in our Discord server, and all events and announcements will be mirrored in our Discord server as well. If we host any online events in future, these too will take place in- you guessed it- the Discord server. So, be there!

Like our Facebook page and/or join our group to watch out for our Facebook events, where clicking going to RSVP can mean another raffle ticket to our various anime figure and other prize giveaways! Are you an artist? Don’t forget to join our artist-specific Facebook group as well!

A very general overview about us

In essence, UBCAni is a social club for anime fans to gather and sometimes do anime related activities. Throughout the school year, we cycle through different activities for members to participate in each Friday evening, from 5PM onwards. While we have dedicated time blocks for anime viewings and artist meetups, the main focus of each weekly is the activity, which includes things like karaoke, board games night, video games night, group dinner outings, and much more. In the event that we are forced to lock down and go back to being online only instead, our online activities are usually playing some sort of game together online such as Skribblio, Mafia, Anime Music Quiz, etc.

Throughout the year, we also host bigger, paid events such as our Halloween and Valentine’s Socials and a cosplay cafe. The first event will be our icebreaker, so mark your calendars for September 24th

For more information, feel free to explore the tabs at the top of our website, ranging from who our sponsors are (flashing your membership card will get you discounts and deals), our current executive team, our mascots, and our other social media!

Check below the break for a basic guide on how to use Discord and join/participate in our server!
