UBC Anime Club’s 2022-2023 Exec Team (+ new sponsor!)

A huge thank you to all of the amazing candidates that ran this year. We really do mean it when we say that not only was this year’s roster of exec candidates was unprecedented, with actual contested positions for the first time since 2018 and the first time presidency has been contested since 2016, but it was also a nail-bitingly close race. Every single candidate put their best foot forward, and at points the race was down to just one or two votes. But the people have spoken with their ballots, and this is what they said:

President
Oleg Chepakovich

Treasurer
Michael Xian

Vice-President Internal
Afiq Aqlan

Vice-President Exeternal
Jacob Zhang

Creative Director
Poff

Director of Communications
Ray Raffaele

Events Coordinator
Naomi Loy

Librarian
Ivan Feng

Secretary
Spencer Terry

A huge congratulations to the winning candidates, and once again a big thank you to everyone who ran as a potential candidate. Thank you to everyone who ran, and thank you to everyone who voted! It is genuinely wonderful to have so many people who are so enthusiastic to help with the club, and it is with all of you guys’s help that the club can continue to exist and thrive.

Just in time before the year ends, our current VPE Johnny has managed to secure us a sponsorship with pretty much the best arcade in the Lower Mainland, eSpot in Richmond! eSpot has a fantastic selection of weeb arcade games, especially rhythm games (such as maimai, Taiko no Tatsujin, Chunithm, Sound Voltex, Beatmania IIDX, Jubeat, Groove Coaster, Dance Dance Revolution A, Gitadora, Project Diva) racing games like Initial D Infinity 8, and many more!

UBC Anime Club members are now entitled to a 5% discount for PASELI, the currency used to pay for playing rhythm games like the ones mentioned above, by showing your membership card and matching ID at the service counter. Though Richmond may seem far away, having done a club outing to eSpot before, we can say with confidence this is the best arcade in Vancouver for weebs and is worth travelling to.

Location:
eSpot, 8181 Cambie Rd. #1000, Richmond, BC V6X 3X9
Hours:
Mon – Thurs: 2PM – 1AM
Fri – Sun: 2PM – 2AM

Interested in other discounts you may be eligible for in stores around Vancouver thanks to your UBCAni membership? Make sure to check our full list of sponsors and discounts here

Thank you all for attending the icebreaker!

A big, big thank you to the literally astonishing, record-setting scores of people who attended our icebreaker event this past Friday. We hope you had a good time! A few housekeeping things:

First of all, for everyone who purchased a membership but was not given the 2021-2022 membership card and given a card from previous years as an IOU, we apologize for the inconvenience and are waiting to receive another batch of cards to give out to you as soon as possible! We will notify everyone of when we receive the new batch of cards and then you will be free to attend any of our future events, including weekly activites, to exchange your IOU for this year’s valid membership card that you can provide to sponsors. You are also free to contact an exec (directly on Discord or message our Facebook page) to arrange a different meeting time at our clubroom in the Nest at room 3206C.

Second of all, our abomination of an Icebreaker video is now freely available to the public to microdose themselves with radioactive bursts of cringe- uh, I mean, to watch! See below:

Finally, we know it was an incredibly hectic start and we apologize for that. This was genuinely a record-breaking event for our club, and we hope to be much better prepared for events in the future. That said, we would always appreciate member feedback on whether you enjoyed the event, our video, and the games we came up with! We will be grateful for any feedback we receive and will use it to improve the club’s future events. Fill out the feedback form here

Updates

Hello everyone! Our sponsors page has been updated with our sponsors for the 2014-2015 year. If you’ve got a membership and you love to buy anime merchandise or cosplay items then it would be a good idea to see if your favourite stores have a discount for you.

Other than that, we hope to see you at our Icebreaker today at 5pm! Remember that this event is open to everyone (whether you have a membership or not) so bring your friends and check it out.

Our regular showings will begin next week, at BUCH 104, 5pm – 10pm. Stay tuned for a chance to enter a raffle sometime next week too!
